Created in 1944 by the government of Canada as a manufacturer of the PBY Canso flying boats for the RCAF for patrol duty.
In 1946 , Electric Boat Company bought Canadair. The Electric Boat Company joined General Dynamics in 1952 , and in 1954 General Dynamics purchase Corvair and recognize Canadair as its Canadian subsidiary.
The Canadian government reacquired Canadair in 1976. It remained a federal crown corporation until 1986 when it was sold to Bombardier Aerospace as part of the privatization plan of the Mulroney government.
Business Jets or Regional Jet Line
Known as the RJ Series, the business jet or regional jet continues to be Canadair's primary aircraft for several years as part of Bombardier. Recently the branding has been stopped and all lines are now simply known as part of Bombardier Aerospace.
Aviation First
Canadair was a source of many aviation first.
By swinging the rear fuselage the CL-44D was the first aircraft allow access in this method.
Canadair produced the first surveillance drones used by several Countries armed forces. These where the CL-89 and CL-289.
Using rotating wings to achieve vertical lift-off on their CL-84.
First specific use waterbomber the CL-215.
